Healing the Fish While Treating the Toxic Ecosystem is Kingmakers of Oakland’s Award Winning Approach to Improving Educational Outcomes for Black Boys. This approach is how Spring Symposium Days are divided:

Day 1: Thursday, April 15th 2021 9am – 1pm PDT

Healing the Fish: Youth Centered

Participants will get a view of our Culturally Relevant Curriculum (Khepera) and speak with students directly to learn practical methods for how to engage with teachers and school leaders in their home districts in support of Black Youth.

This day will also include youth voice, classroom observations and a walkthrough of the pedagogical approach, a share out by the Street Team to present their findings on the Upset the Setup events, and a screening of our NEW Revolution Remix Film!

Day 2: Friday, April 16th 2021 9am – 1pm PDT

Treating the Toxic Ecosystem: Systems Centered

Special Q&A with Tony Smith, former OUSD Superintendent who worked with the School Board to create the first ever Office of African American Male Achievement within a school district and hired Chris Chatmon as Executive Director. Participants will hear from Tony and other systems leaders to understand the challenges and opportunities in their journey towards creating an Office of African American Male Achievement.

Chris Chatmon will also lead a session on, after being appointed ED, what happened next? How did he build the Office of African American Male Achievement?

We will also do a case study panel with Seattle Public School district leaders who will share how their work with Kingmakers of Oakland ultimately led to the creation of their own AAMA!
