The end-of-year TFI Celebration, held on May 31st at Parker Elementary School in East Oakland, was a powerful and heartwarming reflection of a year filled with growth, transformation, and community. Designed to uplift and honor the accomplishments of the young Kings in our college access program, this celebration served as both a joyous gathering and a testament to the impact of collective investment in our youth.
The day brought together students, our JP Morgan Chase mentors, community leaders, and families who have been instrumental in supporting our cohort throughout the academic year. From the moment the event began, the atmosphere was charged with energy, love, and celebration. It was a vibrant gathering where the shared purpose of empowering young men of color took center stage.
One of the most moving parts of the day was the return of TFI alumni who stepped forward to share their own stories. These young men, who once occupied the same seats as our current cohort, reflected on their time in the TFI program and spoke about how it helped propel them forward on their journeys to college and beyond. Their words resonated deeply, offering inspiration, perspective, and a living example of what is possible through perseverance, support, and purpose.
Throughout the day, echoes of laughter rang throughout the middle school gymnasium. Children played, families fellowshipped, and the sounds of music created a joyful backdrop to the festivities. People danced, games were played, and plates were filled with delicious food that added flavor to the celebration.
A highlight of the event was a heartfelt address from our CEO, Brother Chris Chatmon, who spoke directly to the TFI cohort. His message was one of encouragement and purpose, reminding them of their value, their power, and the importance of pressing forward in pursuit of their goals.
The awards ceremony was another powerful moment, honoring students who embodied the core values of Kingmakers of Oakland. Raymond Garza received the “Love” Award, recognizing his compassion and community spirit. Ahmad Jackson and Carmelo Harris were both honored with the “Academic Excellence” Award for their outstanding academic achievements. Each award carried meaning and reflected the ethos that drives our work every day.
As we often say within our organization, “Another day, the KOO way.” This mantra was brought to life through the joy, unity, and sense of purpose that defined the celebration. It was a beautiful reminder of what happens when we surround our youth with love, structure, and community.
In every way, the event marked an exciting and meaningful launch into the summer. Our students left not only celebrated but also empowered, ready to continue their journey with the full force of their village behind them.
