Empowered and United: Seattle Crowning Ceremony

By Adrian Henderson

On May 31st, Chief Sealth High School in Seattle, Washington, was transformed into a space of joy, pride, and cultural celebration. It was a day to remember, an evening where young Kings and Queens stood tall in the spotlight during a deeply moving Crowning Ceremony, honoring their year-long journey through the Crowns Curriculum.

This wasn’t just an event; it was a moment of legacy in the making. City officials, school board leaders, families, educators, and community members filled the space with love and energy, coming together to recognize the hard work, growth, and brilliance of our youth. More than 150 students, dressed to impress, proudly represented their families, their schools, and their futures. Over 100 parents and supporters stood alongside them, not just as witnesses, but as active participants in a shared vision of excellence, culture, and community.

From the moment the ceremony began, the atmosphere was electric. An ancestral libation set the tone, grounding us in purpose and honoring those who paved the way. Beautiful performances uplifted the spirit, reflecting the creativity and cultural pride of our young leaders. And in the midst of it all, a powerful message from our CEO, Brother Chris Chatmon, reminded us why we do this work. His words echoed through the space like a drumbeat, bold, affirming, and rooted in love. He reminded us that this ceremony is not just about crowns, it’s about calling forth greatness, naming power, and reminding our young folks that they are the legacy and the light.

Free food and refreshments brought families and community partners together in fellowship, laughter, and reflection. Conversations sparked between generations, and connections were strengthened between families and educators, community leaders and students.

This Crowning Ceremony was more than a culmination; it was a call to continue. A bold reminder that our young people are destined for greatness and that they are not walking this path alone. With a community behind them and culture guiding them, the future is bright. The event spoke volumes: we believe in our youth, we celebrate them, and we are committed, heart and soul, to their continued success and well-being.

Seattle showed up, and together, we showed out.
