Celebrating Our Journey: Kingmakers’ End-of-Year Celebration

By Leah Dobson

This month, to close out the year, our office hosted an end‑of‑the‑year celebration honoring everyone who has played a key role in shaping Kingmakers over time. At Kingmakers, we work hard—but we also love to have fun and gather with our community whenever possible. The event was potluck‑style, and everyone contributed their unique talents. Kevin immediately manned the grill and smoker, Toks took over the soundboard and set the music, and the rest of our community brought the vibes and good energy.

As people walked through the gate into our backyard, we were greeted by so many familiar smiles—some from current collaborators, others from those who have impacted our journey along the way. We ate, laughed, danced, and conversed, thoroughly enjoying each other’s company.

Later, people shared closing thoughts on our successful year. But the true highlight was the reason we gathered in the first place: the awards ceremony. Each year, we recognize staff members who exemplify our core values. This year’s categories were Love‑Centered, Partnership, Collective Will, African‑Centered, and King‑Centered.

Love‑Centered
Our “Rooted in Love” award honors someone whose love radiates outward—toward self, community, culture, and everything around them. Their actions inspire, uplift, and foster a sense of belonging and empowerment. Congratulations to our Facility Director, Toks Ajike!

Partnership
This award goes to someone who truly understands the power of collaboration. Their commitment to building ecosystems of cooperation empowers everyone involved and fuels sustainable growth. Congratulations to Adrian Henderson, Koo Labs Community Program Manager!

Collective Will
Awarded to a community‑builder whose strength lies in uniting advocates around a shared commitment to Black boys. They’ve created a “cavalry” of leaders—activists, future generations, and changemakers—working toward institutional policies that support our youth. Congratulations to our Director of Research and Impact, Aman Falal!

African‑Centered
This award honors a scholar deeply connected to African history, spirituality, and humanity. Through that foundation, they’ve helped shape a positive Black identity within academic spaces. Congratulations to Jahi, Director of Youth Voice & Leadership and Kingmakers Music!

King‑Centered
This award celebrates a visionary who uplifts Black boys—ensuring their voices are heard, nurturing their ideas, and creating spaces where their dreams can soar. Congratulations to Staci Smith, Director of Curriculum and Training!

Our end‑of‑the‑year celebration and awards ceremony was a wonderful opportunity to recognize each other for the hard work we put in every day to grow this flourishing organization. This work isn’t easy, but it’s vital—because of how we’ve seen it uplift our kids and community. Each person who has been part of our journey, especially these awardees, brings insight, passion, and heartfelt dedication to every space they enter. Thank you all for going above and beyond for our Kings!
