On Saturday, August 16th, in the heart of East Oakland, something truly special was brewing, and believe me, y’all, it wasn’t coffee. It was a morning brimming with purpose, connection, and joy. It wasn’t just another Saturday; it was a beautiful moment of unity between parents, mentors, and staff of The Fellowship Initiative (TFI), coming together in service of our Kings.
KOO staff member Brother Adrian set the tone early by rising with the sun to prepare a delicious brunch honoring the unwavering dedication of our TFI parents and mentors. Hosted graciously by Sister Ginale, who opened her home, kitchen, and garden, the gathering radiated warmth and community spirit from the first bite to the last conversation.
With plates full and hearts open, the group leaned into meaningful dialogue. How can we deepen our collective commitment to our young Kings as they enter their pivotal senior year? Between laughter, strategy, and shared memories, parents and mentors explored real plans for real impact. Scheduling, feedback, and brainstorming flowed like music because when community comes together with love and intention, transformation begins.
And the best part? We didn’t just talk—we took action. A series of joyful, relationship‑building events were confirmed, including our first‑ever Parent & Mentor Movie Night at the KOO Labs Production House on September 12, followed by a Bowling Night on October 5 at Alameda Bowl. These moments are about more than fun; they’re about creating new pathways of engagement, belonging, and support.
The brunch wasn’t just a meal—it was a movement in motion. It reminded us all that this work, though challenging, is deeply rewarding. We’re not just supporting students; we’re building a village, and each shared meal, each honest conversation brings us closer to the kind of transformative change our Kings deserve.
So if you’ve got the time, the love, and the energy, pull up. Bring your good vibes, your ideas, and your commitment Because as Ice Cube said, “It was a good day.” And this, friends, was a great one.
