We are thrilled to announce that Kingmakers of Oakland is partnering with RISE Academy in the Lancaster School District to implement our transformative Crowns Curriculum for the upcoming school year.
The Crowns Curriculum is a culturally grounded course designed to engage, encourage, and empower young Black men by deepening their connection to African history, Black culture, and self‑identity. Rooted in cultural pride and belonging, the curriculum equips students with the tools to navigate life’s challenges, explore their purpose, and become positive forces in their classrooms, schools, and communities.
This exciting partnership with RISE Academy is the result of a powerful encounter that took place a few years ago at our annual Spring Symposium. A delegation of young Kings and educators from Lancaster attended the event and left a lasting impression. The students arrived dressed in sharp blazers, ties, and crisp white shirts, fully embodying the dignity and pride we aim to cultivate. They asked thoughtful questions, shared their lived experiences, and engaged deeply in keynote discussions. They offered wisdom well beyond their years and, as young people do, they brought joy and laughter to the day.
Their adult chaperones were deeply moved and inspired by the experience. They expressed a strong desire to bring Kingmakers programming to their district. After thoughtful dialogue and planning with district and site leaders, we are proud to begin this meaningful work at RISE Academy, an alternative education site committed to student equity and transformation.
In late July our team led a three‑day professional development session with RISE staff, including Principal Smith and Director of Student Equity, Access, and Outcomes Alesha Cayce. This fall, RISE will launch two Crowns Curriculum courses: one for elementary Kings and another for middle school Kings.
We warmly welcome RISE and Lancaster School District to the Kingmakers family!
