We continue uplifting and empowering Black youth, and we want to remind our community that Griots of Oakland Volume II is still available for purchase. It remains one of the most powerful tools we have for showing our Kings what is possible for young men who look like them.
A griot (pronounced GREE-oh) is traditionally a West African storyteller, historian, poet, musician, and advisor entrusted with preserving oral history and culture. Griots use music, song, and narrative to record traditions, genealogies, and communal values.
Released in November 2024 by Kingmakers of Oakland, Griots of Oakland Volume II brings this legacy into contemporary Oakland. Young Black men served as modern griots by interviewing over 80 Black men across the city, sharing stories of identity, resilience, and purpose. These student-griots not only preserved oral history—they elevated voices, promoted reflection, and connected generations, renewing the griot tradition in service of empowerment and narrative change. These stories reflect the brilliance, struggles, and strength of Black men navigating life, community, and purpose.
“To see that what I went through could be in a book and help someone, made me hold my head higher,” shared Ne’Quwan Taylor, a Griot from Volume I.
More than just a collection of interviews, Griots II is a dynamic, multimedia experience with powerful portraits and an immersive AR layer created in collaboration with the app Black Terminus. Readers can scan images and watch video interviews come to life right from the page. It offers young Black men the opportunity to see themselves reflected as leaders, visionaries, and change-makers.
“It’s important for the kids coming after me to see people who look like them being articulate and proud,” said Clayton, a student Griot from McClymonds.
