Where Are TFI Alumni Now? Willie’s Journey from Student to Leader
Based on an interview with Willie, Kingmakers of Oakland’s TFI Alumni
By Leah Dobson
I had the honor of speaking with Willie Rogers, one of our young alumni from The Fellowship Initiative (TFI) program. During most of his childhood, Willie did not consistently have African‑American male teachers and role models, but he explained that TFI’s weekly Saturday sessions became a powerful turning point in his life, allowing him to envision a brilliant future. He excelled in our program and now attends the historically black college, Morehouse.
To highlight one of his recent accomplishments, on July 11, 2025, our TFI alum Willie, flew from Oakland to Vilnius, Lithuania, to attend the “Get Engaged Leadership Conference” as a part of the Brothers At TFI Ambassador program. An annual gathering of emerging young global leaders, where participants network, engage in leadership workshops, and share the progress of their existing projects. At the conference, Willie and his peers connected across cultures, learned from each other, and refined their initiatives.
Now, as Willie continues his education at Morehouse, he recognizes that the brotherhood he’s building there is preparing him to return to his community with greater capacity to mentor and uplift others. This responsibility extends beyond formal mentorship. It is present in everyday interactions, where modeling respect, integrity, and perseverance shapes the next generation.
He also understands that true responsibility includes sharing that knowledge with younger generations. Building a continuous cycle of awareness that empowers Black youth to see their potential, despite systemic barriers.
One of his favorite poets, James Baldwin, once said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” For Willie, facing our history and educating ourselves is the first step toward dismantling ignorance—and in doing so, forging stronger, more empowered communities.
We are extremely proud of your accomplishments, Willie, and can’t wait to see all of the other amazing places you go. Watching you grow into a strong, accomplished, kind young man and leader in your community has been a true privilege.
Keep shining your light, king!
