Rooted in Joy: Kingmakers and Oakland Roots Unite at the Coliseum with the National Anthem and Halftime Show!

By Leah Dobson

On August 9, Kingmakers of Oakland had the privilege of collaborating with Oakland Roots, a professional men’s soccer team based in Oakland, California. We were honored to perform both the national anthem and the halftime show on the legendary grounds of the Oakland Coliseum.   From its inception, Oakland Roots has demonstrated unwavering love and support for our city. From uplifting local artists to becoming a beloved brand that residents wear with pride, Oakland Roots is fast becoming a local favorite and staple.

As the pregame began, the crowd fell silent, offering a moment of calm as Leah Dobson opened the evening by singing the national anthem. Echoing across the field, she concluded the classic anthem gracefully with the line, “Let us march on till victory is won,” reminding the audience that the journey toward true freedom for many Americans is still ongoing.

During halftime, Reach Back Retain took the stage and transformed the energy in the stadium. Their authentic performance had everyone dancing, cheering, and smiling, as Fiyah and Jordan rocked the house. They brought rhythm, rhyme, and a new sound, taking hip hop to the next level!

What made the evening even more special was seeing Kingmakers’ own staff and supporters in the crowd with family, teammates, and friends. All shared the moment with genuine joy and pride. We stayed, watched the game, cheered on the Roots, and became part of something larger than just a pregame and halftime performance. It was simple. It was a community.

When Oakland’s professional sports teams moved, the city longed for the community engagement and cultural hub that professional games provided. We needed  a team to cheer for. A team that truly understood our city,  its beauty, its history, and its potential. The resurgence of Oakland teams brought life back into our crowds and fans. On August 9th, you could feel the energy in the stadium, the joy, and the pride. It was an honor to take part in the rebirth of Oakland sports.
