Although our Jegnas are not in classrooms this summer, their impact continues to grow far beyond school walls. Jordon and James, two standout Jegnas from this past school year at MLK, Jr. Elementary, are returning in the fall with even more purpose. They’ll not only continue their work at MLK but also help launch the Jegna program at East Oakland Pride Elementary School—an exciting expansion fueled by their dedication.
East Oakland Pride’s Principal Grant, after meeting with Jegna program creator Dr. Carroll, shared her enthusiasm for the program and is already factoring Jegnas into her classroom planning for kindergarten and first grade. In a sign of true collaboration, the Jegnas have been invited to join teachers in preparing classrooms this August.
Jordon and James are also reaching new heights creatively. They submitted a video pitch to Promise Venture Studios’ Promise Sandbox Award, proposing to turn Akira’s Book Club’s parts-of-speech books into engaging music videos for children. Out of 149 applications, they were selected as one of only 17 finalists! Jordon even completed a one-on-one interview to further present the vision. Regardless of the final outcome, their passion and innovation already make them winners in our eyes.
Feedback from teachers reaffirms the program’s powerful impact: “The kids love them,” one teacher said. “Students who usually act out change their behavior around Mr. James,” shared another. These are more than mentors—they are role models who help transform classroom culture.
Unfortunately, like many DEI initiatives, the Jegna program faces funding challenges and won’t be able to expand in Year 3. But with renewed energy and the help of new volunteer Ms. Casta Guillaume, we’re actively seeking ways to grow.
The need for Jegna is clear. Their presence matters. And their story is just getting started.
