A Moment of Unity: Kingmakers’ Mural Unveiling and Open House

Our mural unveiling and open house was a true representation of love, unity, and purpose. The evening opened with powerful remarks from our CEO and founder, Chris Chatmon, who reminded us why Kingmakers exists: to create a home where Black boys are uplifted, centered, and empowered. He welcomed Mayor Barbara Lee with warmth and gratitude and honored her for her unwavering commitment to our community. Kingmakers presented her with a custom painting of Marcus Foster, Oscar Wright, and Barbara Lee herself, paired with the words Engage, Encourage, Empower.

When the mural was revealed, the crowd of kings and queens witnessed Mayor Lee become visibly moved. She expressed her gratitude and reflected on what it meant to be placed alongside leaders who helped shape Oakland’s history. She closed her appreciation with a powerful reminder:
“We have to value our young people because you are the future and the world is in your hands. This is about our young Black men and women not just surviving but thriving.” Her words settled over the room and captured the spirit of the day.

West Oakland native Brother Refa, the artist behind our mural titled Divine Masculine, then shared the meaning of the piece. He spoke about unity, sacred brotherhood, self-determination, ancestral connection, and the passage into manhood. His words carried the same depth as the artwork behind him.

After closing remarks, guests toured KOO Labs, and the energy remained electric. Love, joy, and hope filled the space as our community looked up at the mural in awe. This piece marks a step forward in our ongoing journey to heal through art, togetherness, and an understanding of our rich and powerful history.
