TFI takes kings tech event for Super Bowl Weekend

By: Adrian Henderson

TFI King Xavier Board recently had the opportunity to represent our program at an exciting “Inspire Change” tech workshop in San Francisco. The event brought together students from programs across Oakland, including SPAC and Gameheads, for a day focused on innovation, sports, and technology.

With more than 100 students in attendance, participants rotated through four interactive workshops. Some sessions focused on technology, including exploring artificial intelligence and experimenting with motion capture tools used in video game development. Other activities incorporated sports analytics, including a vertical jump challenge where teams tested and compared their results. Former NFL players and professionals from EA Sports were also present, sharing their experiences and offering insight into careers that blend athletics and technology.

For Xavier, a senior who has been part of TFI since his sophomore year, the highlight of the day was working with motion capture gloves. The gloves translated students’ hand movements onto a screen in real time, demonstrating how animation for sports video games is created. Seeing the technology respond instantly to his movements left a lasting impression.

As an added surprise, each student received a brand-new Copilot computer to take home. Xavier plans to use his in college as he explores potential majors in music or film, with a growing interest in screenwriting.

Most importantly, the event reinforced the power of representation and community. Xavier shared how meaningful it was to be surrounded by peers who looked like him and shared similar interests. Experiences like this continue to expand our Kings’ confidence, curiosity, and vision for their futures.
