The Commencement of Leaders: Recapping the 2026 Student Showcase
On a powerful Saturday in April, the Kingmakers of Oakland community gathered at BLOC15 to witness a profound realization of our mission. The 2026 Student Showcase was more than just a presentation of projects; it was a vibrant, high-energy activation of TFI, KOO Labs Academies, Crowns Curriculum, and the Jegna Program and a testament to the "Collective Genius" that thrives within our Kings.
The day kicked off with an electric performance by Samba Funk, whose drumming and movement set a tone of ancestral pride and joy that resonated throughout the venue. As the rhythm filled the space, it was clear that this wasn't just an event, it was a celebration of sanctuary and brotherhood.
The showcase was expertly hosted by Khalil Chatmon, head of our TFI program, and Nia Lundkvist, the lead writer of our Crowns Curriculum. Their synergy on stage bridged the gap between the academic framework our students study and the lived excellence they demonstrate daily. Having the architects of the curriculum lead the day ensured that every activation was viewed through the lens of identity, narrative, and leadership.
One of the most moving highlights was the presence of the Kingmakers of Seattle, who traveled across state lines to stand in solidarity with our Oakland Kings. This cross-chapter connection reminded everyone in attendance that the movement to engage, encourage, and empower Black male students is expanding into a national brotherhood.
The heart of the event, however, belonged to the students. Every corner of BLOC15 featured student presentations. We saw the tangible results of our Kings moving from consumers of media to creators of it. Perhaps most impactful were the moments we made space to hear directly from our Kings on stage. Seeing our TFI Kings stand tall, speak their truth, and share their journey reminded us why these sanctuary spaces are non-negotiable.
The community response was as powerful as the presentations. We were thrilled to reconnect with so many longtime supporters and partners who have stood by us. Through the collective generosity of those in the room, we raised over $4,000 during the event. These funds will go directly toward the continued expansion of our creative academies and the infrastructure required to keep our Kings at the cutting edge of media and design.
The excellence on display didn't go unnoticed by the broader public, either. We are proud to share that the Showcase received significant media attention, highlighting the innovative work coming out of Kingmakers of Oakland.
