Position Overview

Kingmakers of Oakland is seeking a part-time Kingmakers Facilitator to teach the Kingmakers/Crowns Curriculum to approximately 20 students at an Oakland small high school during the 2026–2027 school year. This position is designed for an educator or youth development practitioner who is deeply committed to the brilliance, identity development, academic success, and holistic growth of Black boys.

The Crowns Curriculum is a year-long course designed to support Black boys in developing the skills to grapple with their self-identity and purpose. Through critical inquiry, students articulate how their identity shapes their world experience and community, while engaging in a space that centers Black men, their identities, experiences, and relationship to the world around them.

The Kingmakers Facilitator will be responsible for preparing and facilitating curriculum lessons, creating a positive and engaging classroom culture, participating in training and meetings, collaborating with Kingmakers and school staff, and supporting students’ intellectual, emotional, social, cultural, and personal development.

Schedule and Workload

The class will meet during the school day on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.

The position includes:

  • 2 hours of teaching per week

  • 2 hours of preparation per week

  • 2 hours of meetings per week

  • 16 hours of required summer training

Primary Responsibilities

Curriculum Facilitation and Instruction

  • Facilitate the Kingmakers/Crowns Curriculum with fidelity, care, preparation, and cultural grounding.

  • Create a classroom environment where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

  • Support students in exploring identity, purpose, history, community, leadership, and the experiences of Black men.

  • Use lesson plans, facilitator notes, worksheets, note-taking guides, unit summaries, icebreakers, primary source documents, Black history resources, texts, media, projects, assessments, and reading/writing supports provided through the curriculum.

  • Prepare for each lesson by reviewing learning objectives, materials, prior knowledge, activities, exit ticket options, and formative and summative assessment opportunities.

  • Adapt facilitation strategies to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, strengths, and areas of need.

  • Encourage student voice, leadership, critical inquiry, reflection, and active participation.

  • Support students in developing a sense of belonging, cultural and racial identity, self-efficacy, and collective responsibility.

Student Support and Classroom Culture

  • Build authentic, respectful, and caring relationships with students.

  • Provide a positive environment where students feel seen, valued, challenged, and supported.

  • Model professional, ethical, and culturally grounded behavior when working with students, families, school staff, and Kingmakers team members.

  • Maintain high expectations while leading with love, patience, consistency, and accountability.

  • Support the intellectual, emotional, social, cultural, and personal growth of students.

  • Communicate concerns, celebrations, attendance patterns, and student needs to the Chief Program Officer and appropriate school partners.

Planning, Preparation, and Collaboration

  • Complete weekly preparation for instruction.

  • Participate in required meetings with Kingmakers staff and/or school partners.

  • Attend required summer training focused on Kingmakers pedagogy, curriculum mechanics, and facilitation expectations. The Crowns model includes facilitator training, monthly PLCs, office hours, observations, and feedback as part of the implementation support structure.

  • Collaborate with Kingmakers staff, school staff, and peers to strengthen the instructional environment.

  • Receive observation, feedback, and coaching as part of ongoing professional development.

  • Help assess student engagement, curriculum implementation, and opportunities for improvement.

Record Keeping and Communication

  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to attendance, participation, assignments, reflections, and other agreed-upon program requirements.

  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with students, school staff, Kingmakers staff, and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Meet deadlines, honor schedules, and maintain efficient work habits.

  • Protect student confidentiality and follow all school and organizational expectations.

  • Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Program Officer.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching, youth facilitation, youth development, mentoring, or related experience.

  • Experience working with Black boys and young men in school, community-based, or youth development settings.

  • Demonstrated commitment to pro-Blackness, anti-racism, culturally responsive pedagogy, and the holistic development of Black boys.

  • Strong facilitation, classroom culture-building, and relationship-building skills.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to prepare lessons, facilitate discussions, support student reflection, and respond to student needs in real time.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff, organizational staff, families, and community partners.

  • Ability to complete required background clearance, including Live Scan or other school-site clearance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Classroom teaching experience in a middle school or high school setting.

  • Experience facilitating identity development, ethnic studies, Black history, leadership development, rites of passage, SEL, or culturally responsive curriculum.

  • Familiarity with Oakland schools, Bay Area youth, or community-based education programs.

  • Experience using Google Slides, Google Drive, Google Classroom, or similar instructional tools.

  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning needs.

  • Comfort facilitating dialogue about identity, history, community, purpose, leadership, and social conditions.

  • A reflective stance toward their own practice and a willingness to receive feedback.

  • Reliability, professionalism, humility, and strong follow-through.

  • Alignment with the mission, values, and pedagogy of Kingmakers of Oakland.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

This position requires regular in-person presence at an Oakland small high school. The facilitator must be able to teach during the school day, move within a classroom setting, engage students in discussion and activities, and participate in meetings and training as required.
