A Night of Film, Fellowship, and Purpose at KOO Labs
By: Adrian Henderson
The TFI Movie Night at the KOO Labs Design Center and Production House was more than just a film screening; it was a celebration of community, culture, and connection. Under the open sky, families, students, and mentors gathered to enjoy popcorn, candy, and powerful storytelling. The featured film, The Great Debaters, starring the legendary Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker, set the tone for an evening of inspiration and deep reflection.
While the outdoor setting added excitement and anticipation, the true magic of the night came from the fellowship. It was a rare and beautiful opportunity for our mentors to connect meaningfully with parents, building the village that supports our Kings on their journey. As our seniors approach the threshold of graduation, gatherings like this serve as vital touchpoints, creating space to celebrate progress and reaffirm the collective commitment to their success.
The film itself was a poignant reminder of the resilience of Black people in the face of systemic oppression. Set during the Jim Crow era, The Great Debaters echoed today’s realities: racial injustice, the dehumanization of Black lives, and barriers to access in education and opportunity. From the past to the present — Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor — the film drew chilling parallels to our current struggles. Yet, it also delivered a timeless truth: despite it all, we rise.
As the credits rolled, the message was clear and powerful: We can do and be anything we want, with the strength of community behind us. Our families, students, and mentors left that night inspired by what’s possible when love, history, and purpose converge. It was, without a doubt, a good night — one that will be remembered and built on.
