Futurisme Studios Juneteenth Celebration Honors Black Joy and the Ongoing Pursuit of Freedom

An interview with Senay

This Juneteenth, kingmakers facilitator Senay, transformed his Oakland store, Motherboard, into a space for community, music, and celebration by hosting a free DJ event featuring some of his favorite local artists. Alongside dancing and connection, guests could shop an exclusive capsule collection featuring the phrase "Free the Future," a reminder that freedom is an ongoing journey.

"We got to create a space for Black folks to come together for free and enjoy one another," Senay said. "I think Juneteenth celebrates the progress that we've made toward freedom."

For Senay, the music, dancing, fashion, and art were more than entertainment. They created opportunities for people to connect, celebrate Black culture, and experience joy together. He believes Juneteenth offers a rare chance to gather as a community while honoring both the resilience of those who came before and the work that continues today.

"Juneteenth is one of the few holidays we have that's really centered around Black joy and not just Black pain," he said. "Sometimes we just need to celebrate because we deserve it. Juneteenth feels like the fruits of our labor."
