Bro. Erro lights up the March KOO Open Mic

3/29/24 Oakland, CA – The air at Oak Stop crackled with anticipation on March 29th as the stage was set for the 4th Kingmakers of Oakland (KOO) Open Mic event. For the past four months, KOO has been a beacon for young individuals, aged 14-20, providing them with a platform to unleash their voices and speak truth to power.

Queen steps to the mic for the first time This month’s event saw even more first-timers step up on stage to leave their mark. The Good Friday night was nothing short of electric, with over 10 talented youths gracing the mic to share their truths with the world. From passionate spoken word performances to soul-stirring musical numbers, the crowd was treated to a kaleidoscope of styles, topics, and deliveries that left them captivated and inspired.

“It takes a lot of confidence to get in front of people and share your words,” Co-host (and KOO Curriculum Designer) Nia Lundkvist announced. “These are life-changing opportunities, as performers share their soul the audience also get empowered with new thoughts that stretch their mind and spirt which initiates growth. So come up and speak truth to power tonight.” 

At the heart of KOO’s mission lies a commitment to uplifting youth voices and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. KOO Hosts Bro. Ej Walls and Sis. Nia brought boundless energy and encouragement, creating a supportive atmosphere that emboldened first-time performers to step into the spotlight with confidence.

Their words, delivered with breathtaking cadence, resonated deeply with the audience, leaving them in awe before they ceremoniously dropped the mic. As the applause echoed through the room, it was clear that this was more than just a performance—it was a declaration of empowerment and agency.

As KOO continues its monthly Open Mic series, coming back in May. KOO remains steadfast and dedication to activating youth voice and leadership, ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to be heard and celebrated.
