The Jegna Journey: A new generation of mentors is making a difference inOakland elementary schools.

This academic year, two Jegnas are continuing their work at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School and East Oakland Pride Elementary School, bringing mentorship, academic support and positive engagement to students in pre-K through second grade.

Working alongside teachers, the Jegnas provide one-on-one tutoring, support classroom instruction, contribute to curriculum development and lead outdoor literacy activities. At East Oakland Pride Elementary, they also facilitate a group specifically for Black boys, creating a space where young students can share their experiences, build confidence, strengthen relationships and see positive possibilities for their future.

The 2025–26 evaluations from teachers and Jegna staff reinforced the commitment of the partners that created the Jegna Program, KOO and Akira’s Book Club, to simultaneously support young Black elementary students and young Black men by encouraging young Black men to explore careers in early childhood education. Teachers described the Jegnas as instrumental in engaging students, helping de- escalate conflicts and providing valuable support throughout the classroom. Thus, their presence in classrooms is contributing to a more positive school experience for students and teachers. Teachers reported that fewer students are being sent to the office or suspended, reflecting the value of having trusted, supportive Jegnas working directly with children.

But the impact of the Jegnas extends beyond the elementary students. The Jegnas themselves are learning and growing through their experiences in the classroom. They are developing greater self-confidence, strengthening their leadership skills and gaining a clearer understanding of their own professional paths. This year they are tabling at the Life is Living festival in West Oakland. Jegna James and Jegna Jordon will be facilitating coloring, puzzles and reading for the children while sharing information about the Kingmakers and Akira’s Book Club collaboration and their Jegna journey. The Jegna Journey is creating a powerful circle of growth: young men are gaining experience as mentors and educators while young children benefit from their guidance, encouragement and presence.

Although impacted by funding issues, as the program enters another academic year, KOO and Akira’s Book Club look forward to continuing to nurture this journey—and to watching both the Jegnas and the children they serve grow, learn and thrive.
